Vänersborg enjoys an idyllic location at the southernmost point of Lake Vänern, Sweden's largest lake, and at the outflow of the Göta älv river. Due to its location and the canals that cross the city, it has earned the nickname 'Little Venice'. The city was founded in the 17th century and has a regular street grid and a welcoming atmosphere. The centre is a mix of historic wooden buildings and modern architecture, shops and cafes. Skräckleparken, a beautiful park that stretches along the shore of Lake Vänern, is the heart of the city and has walking paths, bathing spots and wide-open views of the lake. The cultural and natural experiences are diverse. Vänersborg Museum is one of the oldest museums in Sweden and displays the art and natural history of the region. A special highlight is the proximity to the twin mountains Halleberg and Hunneberg. These plateau mountains are a royal hunting ground and famous for their large moose population, which has earned them the name 'the Moose Mountains'. Here, visitors can take part in moose safaris or hike on marked trails. Water sports enthusiasts and anglers will find a true paradise on Lake Vänern and in the Göta älv river. Getting to Vänersborg is straightforward. The city is only about an hour's drive from Gothenburg and is well connected by train and car. The nearest airport is Trollhättan-Vänersborg (TNL) with domestic flights, while the international Gothenburg Landvetter Airport (GOT) provides a wider range of connections. The best time to visit is in summer, from June to August, when the weather is warm and the long days are handy for activities on the lake and in nature.
