Getterön Nature Reserve (Sweden)

Weather…

Getterön Nature Reserve is located just north of Varberg on the Swedish west coast and is recognized as one of Northern Europe's most significant bird sanctuaries. Originally a marine bay, the area evolved into a shallow wetland due to land reclamation and natural siltation. Since its formal establishment in 1970, Getterön has become a year-round hub for ornithologists, with over 340 different bird species recorded to date. The reserve is a vital stopover for migratory birds traveling along the Atlantic coastline. During winter months, the ice-free waters provide essential feeding grounds for whooper swans and various duck species. A modern Naturum visitor center features educational exhibits and provides exceptional viewing opportunities through large panoramic windows and strategically placed hides. The mosaic of coastal meadows, reed beds, and open water sustains an extraordinary level of biodiversity within a relatively compact area.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time for waders is during spring migration (April-May) and autumn migration (August-October). In summer many species breed, in winter mainly ducks are seen.
🌅
Best time of day
Low tide is convenient as waders feed on exposed mudflats. Early morning and late afternoon are the most active times for birds.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on paths and do not enter the tidal flats to avoid disturbing breeding birds. Dogs must be on leash and noise kept to a minimum.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars and a spotting scope are important due to often large distances to the birds. Wellington boots or waterproof shoes are recommended in wet conditions.
🧭
Getting there
The nature reserve is directly on the coast near Varberg, accessible by a short walk from the parking area. Parking is available at the entrance.
🦌
What to expect
Birds may be far out; systematically scan the mudflats with a scope. Tide tables help plan the best time.
