Kristianstad was founded in 1614 by King Christian IV of Denmark to defend Danish territories in Scania against Swedish incursions. The city serves as a prime example of a planned Renaissance town, featuring a regular street grid and impressive fortifications. A standout architectural landmark is the Holy Trinity Church (Heliga Trefaldighetskyrkan), regarded as one of Northern Europe's finest Protestant churches. Geographically, the city is defined by its location in a former wetland area, which necessitated the construction of elaborate dikes. Notably, Kristianstad contains Sweden's lowest point, situated approximately 2.4 meters below sea level. Today, the city is the center of the Vattenriket Biosphere Reserve, which hosts a unique diversity of flora and fauna. As a regional commercial and administrative hub, Kristianstad has a high quality of life and is home to Kristianstad University. Its rich history as a border fortress is still visible in the town's layout and its various museums.
