Sesibi (Sudan)

Weather…

Sesibi is a significant archaeological site in northern Sudan, founded as a fortified town during the Egyptian 18th Dynasty under Pharaoh Amenhotep III. Located on the west bank of the Nile, the settlement served as an administrative center for controlling Nubian gold mines and trade routes. A prominent feature is the temple, originally dedicated to the gods Amun, Mut, and Khonsu, but later repurposed under Akhenaten to serve the Aten cult. Excavations have revealed a grid-like street pattern, residential quarters, and monumental granaries, reflecting the high degree of imperial organization. Today, three prominent columns of the temple stand as a testament to the former grandeur of this frontier city, which fulfilled both military and religious functions in the region of Upper Nubia.
