Sai Island Ruins (Sudan)

Weather…

Sai Island in the Nile is one of the largest river islands in Sudan, hosting an extraordinary continuity of human occupation from the Paleolithic to the Islamic era. The ruins encompass monumental remains of the Kerma culture, Egyptian New Kingdom fortifications, and medieval Christian churches. Particularly impressive is the Egyptian town from the time of Thutmose III, which featured massive defensive walls and a temple to secure control over Upper Nubia. During the Kerma period, the island served as a northern outpost of the Nubian kingdom, evidenced by large burial grounds. Later, Sai became an episcopal see in the Christian kingdom of Makuria, as shown by the ruins of a large cathedral with granite columns. The island's strategic location allowed for monitoring Nile traffic, making it a focal point of political and economic power for millennia.
