The Jebel Abiyad Plateau, called 'White Mountain' in Arabic, is a distinctive geological formation in northern Sudan, west of the Nile. The plateau owes its name to the light-colored limestone and chalk layers that form a sharp contrast to the dark desert sand. The region is of great paleontological significance, as numerous fossils from the Eocene and other epochs have been found in the sedimentary rocks, providing insights into the climate of millions of years ago. Topographically, the area is characterized by flat plateaus and steep escarpments formed by wind and water erosion. Despite the extreme aridity, traces of prehistoric settlement are found in protected depressions, suggesting that the region was once wetter. The remoteness of Jebel Abiyad makes it one of the least explored but scientifically most valuable areas of the Libyan Desert in Sudan.

Getting there

The isolated massif in West Darfur is difficult to reach and typically requires a 4x4 off-road vehicle. Access is via unpaved tracks leading from the nearest larger settlements across the desert landscape.

Best season

The cooler months from November to February are best for a visit to avoid the extreme desert heat. During the rainy season, tracks can become impassable, making access to the remote mountain area impossible.

The terrain is characterized by a dry mountain massif with steep, rocky slopes and vast, arid plains surrounding it. Hikes in this isolated landscape often lead through pathless and challenging terrain for visitors.

What to bring

Full desert gear with very large supplies of drinking water and food is vital due to the extreme isolation. GPS devices, emergency communication tools, and robust mountain boots are essential for any expedition here.

Parking

There are no official parking lots; vehicles are usually left near the camp or with local guides in the settlements. It is important to properly prepare your vehicle for the harsh desert conditions before travel.

Safety

Extreme remoteness and the security situation in the Darfur region require very careful planning and checking current travel advisories. Heat exhaustion and disorientation are real dangers in this isolated massif.

Due to the long journey and difficult conditions, a visit should be planned as a multi-day expedition. You must allow at least three to five days to safely reach and explore the area within the desert region.
