Murzuq Old Fort (Libya)

Weather…

The Old Fort of Murzuq is an imposing symbol of the former power and significance of the Fezzan region in southwestern Libya. For centuries, Murzuq was a central hub for trans-Saharan trade, where caravans from the Lake Chad basin and Niger met with goods from the Mediterranean. The fort was constructed in the 16th century under Ottoman suzerainty and served as the seat of local administrators as well as a military base for securing desert routes. The architecture is characterized by massive mud-brick walls, designed to withstand the extreme heat while providing protection against attacks. In the 19th century, Murzuq was the starting point for numerous European expeditions into the interior of Africa. During the Italian colonial period, the fort was modernized for military use, but it lost importance with the decline of the caravan trade. Today, the imposing ruins of the fort stand as a monument to a bygone era of wealth and strategic importance in the middle of the desert.
