Jebel Uwaynat (Sudan) (Sudan)

Weather…

Jebel Uwaynat is a massive granite and sandstone mountain range located at the tri-border of Sudan, Egypt, and Libya. The Sudanese portion of the mountain encompasses the southeastern slopes of this majestic massif, which reaches a peak elevation of 1934 meters. Geographically, it stands as an isolated landmark in one of the harshest parts of the Sahara Desert, yet its geology allows for the trapping of rare rainwater in natural rock pools. Historically, Jebel Uwaynat is world-famous for its prehistoric rock art, including paintings and engravings of giraffes, ostriches, and cattle, proving that the region was once a fertile savanna. It was first brought to international attention in 1923 by the explorer Ahmed Hassanein. Today, due to its remote location and harsh environment, it remains an invaluable site for archaeologists and climatologists studying ancient human migrations and environmental shifts.

Getting there
The Sudanese part of the massif is accessible via unmarked routes from the north, often through Wadi Howar. Access requires military escorts or special permits.
📅
Best season
The cool season from November to January is the only time expeditions can be carried out. Sandstorms are common in spring and can completely obscure visibility.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
This part of Jebel Uwaynat gives dramatic relief with dark rock formations and vast sand plains. Climbing the peaks requires experience in desert alpine hiking.
🎒
What to bring
Robust expedition gear, radios, and a very large supply of fuel and water are vital. Sun protection for extreme UV radiation must not be forgotten under any circumstances.
🅿️
Parking
There are no parking areas in the conventional sense; vehicles are parked in the desert sand at a safe distance from the massif. Drivers must know how to maneuver on soft sand.
⚠️
Safety
Due to the proximity to several borders, the security situation is complex; trips should only be made with certified agencies. The physical strain caused by the environment is extremely high.
