Kutum is a significant town in North Darfur State, western Sudan, situated approximately 120 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital, Al-Fashir. The town lies in an ecological transition zone between the arid Sahara Desert to the north and the more fertile savanna regions to the south. Kutum is well-known for its 'wadis', seasonal watercourses that provide sufficient moisture for productive agriculture after the rains. The area is a major producer of tomatoes, onions, and various fruits, which are traded extensively across the region. The population comprises a diverse mix of ethnic groups, including the Fur, Zaghawa, and various Arab tribes, making Kutum a cultural melting pot. During the colonial era, the town served as a key administrative post for monitoring the border regions. Despite the challenges posed by regional conflicts, Kutum remains a vital market hub for both nomadic herders and sedentary farmers. Its relative proximity to the Marra Mountains influences the local climate, resulting in slightly more moderate temperatures than the surrounding desert expanses.
