Nallur Kandaswamy temple (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is one of the most significant Hindu shrines in Sri Lanka, located in Nallur, near Jaffna. Dedicated to Lord Murugan in the form of Kandaswamy, it serves as the spiritual heart of the Tamil people in the northern province. The temple's history dates back to 948 AD when the first shrine was established during the Jaffna Kingdom era. However, the original structure was destroyed multiple times during colonial rule, most notably by the Portuguese in 1624. The current temple foundation was laid in 1734 during the Dutch period by Ragunatha Maapaana Mudaliyar. The complex is distinguished by its lively red and white striped walls and the massive golden Gopuram (gateway tower) added in 2011. The annual festival, which spans 25 days, is one of the largest religious gatherings in the country, featuring elaborate processions. Strict adherence to religious protocols, such as men entering shirtless, is maintained to preserve the sanctity and ritual purity of the site.
