Poblet Monastery (Spain)

Weather…

Poblet Monastery (Monestir de Poblet) is a Cistercian abbey in Catalonia, Spain. Founded in 1150 by Ramon Berenguer IV, it became a symbol of the power of the Crown of Aragon. The monastery complex includes a fortified church, a cloister, and royal tombs. The church, built between the 12th and 13th centuries, is a fine example of Cistercian architecture, with a Latin cross plan and a large rose window. The royal pantheon holds 5,000-year-old tombs? No: it holds tombs of 9 kings and 5 queens, including James I the Conqueror. The monastery was sacked in 1835 and left in ruins until restoration began in 1930. In 1940, it was reoccupied by monks. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The monastery is surrounded by vineyards and produces its own wine. It attracts some 200,000 visitors each year.
