Monastery of Poblet (Spain)

Weather…

The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet is one of the largest and most impressive Cistercian abbeys in Europe and a masterpiece of monastic architecture. The monastery was founded in 1151 at the foot of the Prades Mountains in Catalonia after Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, donated the land to the monks. Surrounded by a massive fortified wall, the complex harmoniously combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural elements. Poblet owes its historical significance primarily to its role as a royal pantheon: from the late 14th century onwards, it served as the burial site for numerous kings and queens of the Crown of Aragon, whose magnificent alabaster tombs can be admired in the church's transept. Following its expropriation in the 19th century, the complex fell into ruin but was beautifully restored in the 1940s when monastic life resumed. Together with the monasteries of Santes Creus and Vallbona de les Monges, Poblet forms the famous 'Cistercian Route'.
