Monzon Castle (Spain)

Weather…

The Castle of Monzón in the province of Huesca is an impressive Templar fortress perched on a prominent hill overlooking the town. Originally built as an Arabic fortress, it was handed over to the Knights Templar after the reconquest in 1143, who developed it into one of the most powerful commanderies in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. A significant historical event is the education of the young King James I of Aragon, who grew up here between 1214 and 1217 under the protection of the Templars. The castle's architecture reflects the order's strict military requirements, featuring massive towers such as the Torre de Jaime I and a remarkable Romanesque chapel. Following the dissolution of the Templars in the 14th century, the castle passed to the Order of St. John and was later expanded into a modern fortress with bastions during the wars of the 17th and 18th centuries.
