Escombreras Valley (Spain)

Weather…

The Escombreras Valley near the port city of Cartagena is an industrial heartland of Spain and is home to one of the most massive concentrations of energy infrastructure in the entire Mediterranean region. Once a barren landscape, the valley is today a forest of cooling towers, smokestacks, pipelines, and huge storage tanks. The undisputed anchor point of this huge complex is the state-of-the-art Repsol refinery, but the valley features much more: several high-performance combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants for flexible power generation, extensive facilities for the production of advanced biofuels, lubricants, and petrochemical derivatives, as well as major gas storage facilities. The outstanding logistical connection provided by the directly adjacent deep-water port allows for the continuous, high-volume import of raw materials and the efficient export of refined products, making the Escombreras Valley an essential cog in the machinery of the national economy.
