El Soplao Cave (Spain)

Weather…

The 'El Soplao' Cave, located in the rugged mountains of Cantabria in northern Spain, is widely regarded as a geological marvel and is globally celebrated for its extraordinary speleothems. Unlike caves known for prehistoric human habitation, El Soplao was only discovered in the early 20th century by miners excavating tunnels for zinc and lead extraction ('Soplao' is a mining term for the rush of air felt when a tunnel breaches a natural cavern). The subterranean system, which extends for over 17 kilometers, is most famous for its unparalleled abundance of 'eccentric' stalactites, known scientifically as helictites. These delicate, often crystalline formations appear to defy gravity, growing in seemingly random, chaotic directions that resemble delicate spider webs or intricate coral reefs. In addition to these rare helictites, the cave is home to massive standard stalactites, stalagmites, and memorable formations of pure white aragonite. Opened to the public in 2005, visitors now enter the cave aboard a replica mining train.
