Santillana del Mar (Spain)

Weather…

Santillana del Mar is a living museum of medieval and Renaissance architecture, located just a few kilometers from the Cantabrian coast. Despite its name, local lore says it is neither saintly (santa), nor flat (llana), nor by the sea (mar). The town's heart is the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana, one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in northern Spain. The cobblestone streets are lined with noble houses and stone palaces bearing ancestral coats of arms, such as the Palacio de Valdivieso and the Tower of Merino. Just outside the town lies the Altamira National Museum and Research Center, where visitors can see a replica of the 'Sistine Chapel of Paleolithic Art', featuring 15,000-year-old bison paintings. The town center is completely pedestrianized, allowing for peaceful walks through its historic plazas. Visitors should try the local 'sobaos' and 'quesadas', traditional Cantabrian pastries. Summer brings many tourists, so early morning or late afternoon visits are recommended to truly appreciate its timeless atmosphere. It is widely considered one of the most historically intact villages in the country.
