💡 Tips

  • The sandy coves (calas) are small and fill up quickly. Arrive before 10 AM to secure a good spot.
  • Use the 'Cala d'Or Express', a little tourist road train, to easily hop between the different coves and the marina.
  • Visit the 18th-century fort, 'Es Fortí', in the late afternoon. It's free to enter and is the best spot for sunset views.
  • For an authentic experience, visit the market in the nearby town of Santanyí, held every Wednesday and Saturday morning.
  • Wear water shoes. Many of the best swimming spots are off the rocks on the sides of the coves, accessed by ladders.

🧘
Backstreet Walk

Get lost in the quiet residential streets behind the coves to admire the iconic whitewashed, Ibiza-style architecture.

Cala d'Or was designed in the 1930s as a planned resort. The architect Pep Costa drew inspiration from his native Ibiza, which is why the town is characterized today by low, whitewashed buildings with flat roofs. This uniform architectural style gives the settlement an exclusive and harmonious feel that stands out from the usual high-rise developments on the island. The pedestrian zones in the center are lined with cafes, boutiques, and restaurants offering Mediterranean specialties. The coastline consists of seven deeply indented coves, including Cala Gran and Cala Ferrera. The water in these fjord-like calas is calm and crystal clear, making them handy for families and snorkelers. The modern marina in Cala Llonga bay is one of the most important on the island, offering berths for over 500 boats. Evening life is concentrated here, with upscale dining located directly along the quayside. Nearby is the Mondragó Natural Park, famous for its pristine beaches and protected wetlands. The journey from Palma airport takes about 60 minutes by car. The best time to visit is between May and October, when water temperatures are pleasant and all tourist facilities are open. Culinarilly, fresh seafood and local wines from the Felanitx region are highly recommended.
