Caves of Drach (Spain)

Weather…

The Caves of Drach (Cuevas del Drach), located on the eastern coast of Mallorca near the town of Porto Cristo, are among the most mesmerizing karst formations in Europe. This extensive subterranean network consists of four interconnected caverns, the Black Cave, the White Cave, the Cave of Luis Salvador, and the Cave of the French, spanning nearly 1,200 meters in length and reaching depths of 25 meters below ground level. The caves were formed over millions of years as seawater forced its way into the porous limestone. The crown jewel of the complex is undoubtedly Lake Martel (Lago Martel), recognized as one of the largest underground lakes in the world, measuring 115 meters long and up to 30 meters wide. It was first thoroughly explored by the French speleologist Édouard-Alfred Martel in 1896. The cavern's ceilings and walls are adorned with thousands of intricate stalactites and stalagmites. A visit to the caves traditionally concludes with a classical music concert performed by musicians gliding across the crystal-clear waters in softly illuminated boats.
