Eibar, located in a narrow valley in the Basque province of Gipuzkoa, is historically known as 'La Ciudad Armera' (The Armourer City). Since the Middle Ages, the city has been a leading centre for arms manufacturing, a tradition that shaped its industrial development for centuries. Today, this history is documented at the Museum of the Arms Industry. The city has diversified and is now also known for the production of bicycles, sewing machines, and other precision goods. The city's unique location in a steep valley led to a dense, vertical urban development, giving Eibar a distinctive urban profile. After severe destruction in the Spanish Civil War, Eibar was rebuilt and stands as a testament to the resilience of its inhabitants. A modern symbol is the football club SD Eibar, whose promotion to Spain's top division (La Liga) garnered worldwide attention and symbolises the city's community spirit. Eibar is well-connected by the AP-8 motorway to the cities of Bilbao and San Sebastián, making it easy to reach. The best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn. The city is a good base for exploring the green countryside of the Basque Country. Visitors should not miss the local gastronomy, which is famous for its high-quality pintxos (Basque tapas) and the regional cider, sidra, served in traditional sidrerías.
