Gaztelugatxe (Spain)

Weather…

The Gaztelugatxe peninsula, situated on the rugged coastline of the Spanish Basque Country, is a magical destination steeped in history and dramatic natural beauty. Its name is derived from the Basque language, meaning 'castle rock' (gaztelu = castle, aitz = rock). This small, sheer rocky islet is tethered to the mainland by a narrow, man-made stone bridge and a spectacular, zigzagging pathway comprising exactly 241 steps carved directly into the stone. Perched at the very highest point of the crag is a tiny hermitage dedicated to John the Baptist (San Juan), whose origins can be traced back to the 10th century. Over the centuries, this strategic outpost has weathered fierce battles, pirate raids, and local legends of witchcraft. A characterful local custom dictates that upon completing the arduous climb, visitors must ring the chapel's bell three times to ward off evil spirits and make a wish. The awe-inspiring setting achieved global fame when it served as the filming location for 'Dragonstone' castle in the hit television series Game of Thrones.
