Butron Castle (Spain)

Weather…

Butron Castle, located in the province of Bizkaia in the Basque Country, is a unique architectural landmark that blends medieval foundations with 19th-century romanticism. Originally built in the 11th century as a medieval tower-house for the Butron family, it served as a stronghold during centuries of violent clan warfare. Between 1878 and the early 20th century, the Marquis of Cubas undertook a massive reconstruction project, transforming the ruins into a Neo-Gothic fantasy. Drawing inspiration from Bavarian castles and idealized chivalric myths, the architect created a structure filled with slender towers, ornate battlements, and heavy stone carvings. The castle's design prioritizes aesthetic grandeur and social status over practical military defense, typical of the Romantic era's architectural revival. Surrounding the fortress is an expansive exotic park containing over 500 species of trees, including palms and redwoods. Although the interior is currently closed to visitors, the castle remains one of the most iconic and photographed sites in Northern Spain.
