Hondarribia (also known by its Spanish name, Fuenterrabía) is one of the most welcoming towns in the Basque Country, situated at the mouth of the Bidasoa River directly across from the French town of Hendaye. The city is famous for its two distinct but equally alluring districts. The walled old town on the hill is a maze of cobbled streets lined with noble mansions, coats of arms, and the imposing Castle of Charles V, which now serves as a Parador hotel. In stark contrast lies 'La Marina' district, the former fishermen's quarter, where traditional Basque houses with brightly painted wooden balconies (typically green, blue, or red) create an animated atmosphere. Hondarribia is a gastronomic haven; the bars along Calle San Pedro serve some of the region's finest pintxos. The combination of its strategic military history, deep-rooted seafaring traditions, and cutting-edge Basque cuisine makes it.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jul–Sep.
