Getaria is one of the most captivating villages on the Gipuzkoa coast, blending deep maritime traditions with world-class gastronomy. The town is situated on a narrow strip of land leading to the iconic San Anton hill, famously known as 'The Mouse of Getaria' due to its silhouette. Getaria is the proud birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first sailor to successfully circumnavigate the globe. Within its steep, cobblestone medieval streets lies the impressive Gothic Church of San Salvador, notable for its sloping floor that conforms to the natural terrain. Fashion enthusiasts visit Getaria for the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, which celebrates the legacy of the legendary couturier who was born here. The village is equally famous for its culinary scene, specifically fresh fish grilled over outdoor charcoal pits, perfectly paired with the local Txakoli sparkling white wine produced in the surrounding hillside vineyards.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jul–Sep.

Very safe, small fishing village. The main street is narrow one-way - don't drive in summer, parking is only at the village entrance. The San Antón islet is reachable on foot via the causeway, but closed in storms.
Strongly Basque-feeling - locals chat in Euskara among themselves. The Balenciaga Museum has perfect English and French service. At the harbour grill restaurants ('asadores'), Spanish and pointing suffice; the fish speaks for itself.
