Donghae, named after the East Sea, is a spirited port city celebrated for its impressive coastal scenery and profound natural valleys. The most famous landmark is the Chuam Candle Rock (Choeotsdaebawi), a majestic pillar of stone rising from the sea that has been a favorite subject for Korean painters and poets for centuries. It is widely considered one of the best places in Korea to witness the sunrise. The city provides a unique combination of maritime adventures and mountain exploration, centered around the dramatic Mureung Valley. In the Mureung Valley, visitors can marvel at massive rock plates carved with ancient calligraphy and trek to the impressive Ssangpokpo Falls. Closer to the shore, the Mukho Port area features the Mukho Lighthouse and the characterful 'Nongoldam-gil' mural village, where winding alleys tell the stories of local fishing life through colorful street art. For sun seekers, Mangsang Beach is one of the East Coast’s largest and cleanest sandy beaches. Donghae is now easily accessible from Seoul via the KTX high-speed train in about 2.5 hours. Summer is great for seaside activities, while winter features the crispest views of the sea. Local food culture is centered on the catch of the day, with squid and 'Gomchiguk' (moray eel soup) being local favorites. The nearby Cheonok Cave, a rare limestone cave located in the heart of the city, gives a cool underground detour. Donghae serves as a gateway to the mountains and the sea, making it an excellent base for exploring the central East Coast. It provides a more tranquil experience compared to busier coastal hubs, well-suited for those seeking a mix of cultural heritage and natural splendor.
