Hordio Lagoon

The Hordio Lagoon is situated on the eastern coast of Somalia, adjacent to the Ras Hafun peninsula, and represents a geomorphologically significant coastal feature along the Indian Ocean. Separated from the open sea by narrow spits and fossilized coral ridges, the lagoon forms a shallow, tranquil aquatic environment handy for the formation of natural salt pans. Historically, Hordio was a key station on ancient maritime trade routes, with evidence suggesting salt exploitation dating back to the Roman era. The geological foundation of the lagoon consists of Pleistocene marine sediments and coral limestone, which create a stable basin for sediment accumulation.
