Baidoa, also known as Baydhabo, is the capital of the Bay region in southern Somalia. The city is situated on a fertile plateau approximately 250 kilometers northwest of Mogadishu and is a significant agricultural center, often referred to as the granary of the country. Sorghum, maize, and legumes are primarily grown here, supplying the region. Baidoa has a complex political history, serving as the temporary seat of the Somali Transitional Federal Government between 2005 and 2007. Geographically, the city lies at an elevation of about 500 meters, providing it with a slightly cooler climate than the coastal areas. The city is also known as the City of Mandira, indicating its importance as a traditional meeting place. Despite challenges from drought periods, Baidoa remains a critical economic factor for southern Somalia and a major hub for internally displaced persons in the region.
