Rokupr is a small town in Kambia District in Sierra Leone's Northern Province, situated on the Great Scarcies River about 30 kilometers inland from Kambia Town. The town is nationally known as the seat of the Rokupr Agricultural Research Centre (RARC), founded in 1934 by the British colonial government as a Rice Research Station. It is still the most important center for rice research in Sierra Leone and works closely with the West African rice organization AfricaRice and the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute. Rokupr is the source of many local rice varieties adapted to mangrove, lowland, and upland conditions. The surrounding Scarcies floodplains are among the country's most important rice-producing areas; during the dry season, salt, fish, and crabs from the mangroves are also processed here. Rokupr has several schools, a clinic, churches, and mosques, as well as a small jetty for pirogues that link the town to the estuary and the Bonthe island archipelago.
