Mambolo is a small town in Kambia District in Sierra Leone's Northern Province, set on the Great Scarcies River in a wide mangrove and tidal landscape. The town is the headquarters of Mambolo chiefdom and has for centuries been an important hub for Susu and Temne fishermen and salt producers. In the surrounding mangroves, salt is traditionally obtained by evaporation and traded as far as Freetown and the Guinean capital, Conakry. The local economy is also based on lowland rice farming, crab and oyster harvesting, fish smoking, and boat building. In the colonial era Mambolo was an important landing point for small coastal vessels operating between the mouths of the Scarcies rivers, Bonthe, and Freetown. Today the town has several primary schools, a secondary school, a health center, several mosques, and a pirogue jetty providing key connections to the surrounding islands and the mainland.
