Lungi International Airport

Lungi International Airport (FNA) is the premier international gateway to Sierra Leone and the primary hub for air travel in the West African nation. Located in the town of Lungi within the Port Loko District, the airport is geographically separated from the capital, Freetown, by the wide estuary of the Sierra Leone River. The airport's origins date back to 1945, when it was established as a Royal Air Force station (RAF Lungi) during the final year of World War II. Following Sierra Leone's independence in 1961, the facility underwent numerous upgrades to align with international civil aviation standards. A distinctive logistical feature of the airport is the transfer to Freetown, which typically involves speedboats, ferries, or helicopters due to the water barrier. In 2023, a state-of-the-art new terminal was commissioned, significantly expanding the airport's capacity and enhancing the traveler experience with modern processing systems.
