Historic Centre of Saint-Louis (Senegal)

Weather…

The historic center of Saint-Louis, situated on a narrow island at the mouth of the Senegal River, was the first French settlement in tropical Africa. Established in 1659, the city functioned as the capital of Senegal until 1957 and briefly served as the capital of French West Africa. Its architecture is notable for colorful colonial-era buildings featuring wooden balconies and tiled roofs, giving the city a unique aesthetic. An engineering marvel, the Pont Faidherbe is a metal bridge over 500 meters long that connects the island to the mainland, erected at the close of the 19th century. Saint-Louis remains a vital cultural hub, famous for its international jazz festival and the lively fishing traditions of the Guet N'Dar district. In 2000, the historic town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, though it currently faces significant threats from rising sea levels and coastal erosion.
