Jabal Qidr (Saudi Arabia)

Weather…

Jabal Qidr is a striking volcanic cone located within the Harrat Khaybar lava field in northwestern Saudi Arabia. It is considered one of the geologically youngest volcanoes on the Arabian Peninsula, with its last eruptions estimated to have occurred during the Holocene epoch about 2,000 years ago. Rising to an elevation of approximately 2,022 meters above sea level, the summit gives an expansive view over the surrounding basalt formations and solidified lava flows. The dark, nearly black coloration of the rock results from the high content of basaltic magma that reached the surface during effusive eruptions. Geologists study this area extensively to better understand the tectonic processes of the Red Sea rift zone and the volcanic activity on the Arabian Shield. Nearby, rare white volcanoes such as Jabal Abyad are found, composed of silica-rich trachyte, providing a sharp visual contrast to Jabal Qidr. the area is part of Saudi Arabia's efforts to promote geological tourism and highlight the scientific importance of its diverse volcanic landscapes to an international audience.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching the volcanic field usually requires a 4x4 vehicle due to the rough, unpaved terrain and the remote desert location of this dramatic volcanic cone in Saudi Arabia.
📅
Best season
Visiting is typically best during the cooler winter months between November and March, as summer temperatures in the Saudi desert can become extremely hazardous for hikers.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The ground is characterized by sharp, pitch-black basaltic lava flows and loose volcanic ash, which creates a striking but challenging surface that demands constant focus from hikers.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy, high-cut hiking boots with thick soles are essential to protect feet from the sharp volcanic rocks, along with ample water supplies and sun protection for the desert environment.
🅿️
Parking
Formal parking areas are generally non-existent in this remote area; visitors typically leave their off-road vehicles at the base of the cone or at designated camping spots safely.
⚠️
Safety
It is highly recommended to travel with a local guide or in a group of multiple vehicles, as navigation in the Harrat Khaybar field is complex and mobile signals are often very weak.
⏱️
Time needed
A round-trip hike to the rim usually takes between four and six hours, though many visitors choose to spend more time exploring the unique black lava formations nearby in detail.
