What is this place?
The Rutongo Mines north of Kigali are one of Rwanda's largest tin mines and a major producer of this strategic metal. They contribute significantly to Rwanda's mining exports and employ many local workers.
Visiting
The mines are generally not open to the public as they are active mining operations. From surrounding roads, one can see the extraction equipment and waste dumps.
Where to view it
A good viewpoint is the road leading to the mine premises, from which mining terraces can be distinguished. From the hills north of Kigali, a wide view over the mining landscape opens up.
