Sainte Famille Church Kigali (Rwanda)

Weather…

Sainte-Famille Church in central Kigali holds one of the darkest histories of any church in Rwanda. During the 1994 genocide, thousands of Tutsi and moderate Hutu sought refuge here. However, the priest in charge, Wenceslas Munyeshyaka, collaborated with the Interahamwe militia. He is alleged to have provided the names of refugees, who were then taken from the church and murdered. Many were massacred just outside the church. Despite this horrific past, today Sainte-Famille is once again an active parish and one of the largest churches in Kigali. Its imposing red brick building is a prominent feature of the skyline. The church's history serves as a haunting reminder of betrayal and the moral failure of some church leaders during the genocide.
