The peak area functions as a minor watershed between the drainage basins of the Lotru and Latorița rivers. Due to its relative isolation, it remains a pristine habitat for large carnivores such as brown bears, wolves, and lynx. The mountain climate is characterized by long winters and significant snowfall, with snow cover often persisting until late spring. Today, Șocarău is a destination for hikers seeking moderate difficulty trails in less-frequented regions of the Romanian wilderness.
