Bălan is a former mining town located in Harghita County, situated at an altitude of approximately 850 meters in the heart of the Hășmaș Mountains. The settlement's history is deeply intertwined with copper mining, an industry that began in the 17th century and dictated the region's economic development for centuries. The town is located very close to the headwaters of the Olt River, one of Romania's major waterways, and serves as a primary gateway for hiking trails within the Cheile Bicazului-Hășmaș National Park. Following the permanent closure of the copper mines in 2006, the town underwent a significant economic transition, now focusing on ecological tourism and mountain sports. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dense coniferous forests and dramatic rock formations, such as the Piatra Singuratică peak. Despite the demographic decline experienced during the post-industrial era, Bălan maintains its identity as a starting point for exploring the untouched wilderness of the Eastern Carpathians.
