Qurayn Abu al-Bawl, also known as Tuwayyir al-Hamir, is the highest point in Qatar at an elevation of 103 meters. This limestone hill is situated in an otherwise flat desert landscape in the southern part of the peninsula, near the border with Saudi Arabia. Geologically, it is part of the Eocene formation, rich in sedimentary rocks. The surrounding area is barren and characterized by rocky terrain that supports only sparse desert vegetation. Despite its modest height, the summit has a wide panoramic view over the surrounding desert and the nearby oil fields of the Dukhan anticline. The site is of geological interest, providing insights into the region's geological past, particularly the uplift and erosion processes that have shaped the current landscape. It is a destination for hikers and geology enthusiasts wishing to experience the rugged beauty of the Qatari desert.

Getting there

Qatar's highest point is located in the remote south of the peninsula and is typically safely accessible only by using a robust 4x4 vehicle, navigating a combination of southern highways and unpaved, unmarked sandy desert tracks to reach the location.

A visit should strictly be planned during the cooler winter months, usually between November and March, to entirely avoid the extreme, life-threatening desert heat of the summer and ensure a considerably safer, more pleasant drive across the barren landscape.

The surrounding environment is a vast, flat, rocky, and sandy desert expanse; the 'mountain' itself is actually an extremely gentle, unremarkable elevation of just over a hundred meters that can easily be walked up on foot without any climbing required.

Despite the exceptionally low altitude, closed-toe desert boots, generous sun protection, a highly reliable GPS device for off-road navigation, and massive quantities of drinking water are absolutely essential for any trip into this remote desert region.

Parking

There are no formal parking areas; visitors generally just leave their 4x4 vehicles parked in the sand at the base of the slight elevation, taking extreme care not to get stuck in soft sand and to never lose sight of their vehicle in the featureless desert.

The most significant dangers are the extreme desert heat, severe dehydration, and getting deeply lost in the trackless terrain; it is strongly recommended never to travel alone, to share your exact itinerary with someone, and to carry recovery equipment.

The time spent at the actual geographic high point usually only takes a few minutes for a quick photograph, but the entire expedition, heavily factoring in the desert driving to and from Doha, generally occupies a very substantial and demanding half-day.
