Vouzela Castle (Portugal)

Weather…

The Castelo de Vouzela, today often referred to as the Tower of Vouzela or Tower of Vilharigues, is located in the heart of the Viseu region. This medieval fortification was likely constructed in the 13th or 14th century to secure the strategic pass between the Gralheira and Caramulo mountains. The structure is a characteristic example of a fortified tower residence, serving both defensive purposes and as an administrative center for local nobility. The architecture displays the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, featuring thick granite walls and narrow light slits. Over time, the site fell into ruin but has been archaeologically investigated and secured in recent years. Today, the tower's remains serve as a historical landmark for Vouzela, illustrating the importance of regional control over ancient trade routes in central Portugal.
