Murtosa Shipbuilding (Portugal)

Weather…

Located in the heart of the Ria de Aveiro, Murtosa is one of the last remaining centers for traditional wooden shipbuilding in Portugal. The municipal shipyards are world-renowned for constructing the 'Moliceiro', an elegant boat with a distinctive, upturned bow originally used for harvesting seagrass (moliço). This craft has been passed down through generations by 'Mestres' who work without complex blueprints, relying instead on experience and visual judgment. Besides Moliceiros, the yards also produce 'Mercantéis' and lagoon fishing boats. Although the economic significance of seagrass harvesting has declined, the shipyards are experiencing a renaissance through tourism and recreational boating. The preservation of these techniques is of such high cultural importance that efforts are underway to have Moliceiro shipbuilding recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage. Murtosa thus remains a living open-air museum of maritime architecture that defines the identity of the entire region.
