Arnés Castle

The Castelo de Arnes, located in the parish of Arnes within the Soure district, is a medieval fortification that survives today primarily as a ruin. The castle played a strategic role in the defense line along the Mondego River during the Reconquista in the 12th century. It served to monitor the advance of the Moors from the south and to protect the territory of Coimbra. The remaining wall fragments suggest a simple yet effective military structure typical of the border fortifications of that era. Archaeological investigations indicate that the castle was built on an elevation that had already been inhabited in pre-Roman times. Despite its dilapidated state, the site provides a wide view of the surrounding area and remains an important historical witness to the military efforts in consolidating the Portuguese nation.
