The National Centre for the Captive Breeding of the Iberian Lynx (CNCRL) in Silves is a vital facility dedicated to saving one of the world's most endangered feline species. Located in the Herdade da Parra in the Algarve, the center was established as part of the LIFE program to reverse the dramatic decline of the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) population on the Iberian Peninsula. Best season
The breeding centre is open year-round, but the best chance to see lynx is in spring when the cubs are active. In autumn, adults are also well observable during the mating season.
Best time of day
Guided tours typically take place in the morning, when lynx are more active after their night's rest. Late afternoon also often finds them more alert, especially just before feeding.
Etiquette
Stay strictly behind the barriers and avoid making loud noises to avoid stressing the sensitive animals. Flash photography is prohibited as it can startle the lynx.
What to bring
Binoculars are very helpful for observing the lynx in detail even from a distance. A camera with good zoom is recommended, as the animals often keep their distance.
Getting there
The centre is located near Silves in the Algarve and is reachable by car via the A22 motorway. Visits are only possible as part of a guided tour, so advance booking is required.
What to expect
Lynx are very shy animals that camouflage well - even in the breeding centre it may take a while to spot them. Patient waiting and quiet behaviour greatly increase the chances of a sighting.
