Vila Real de Santo António is a coastal city in the eastern Algarve, situated on the western bank of the Guadiana River at the border with Spain. The city was founded in 1774 by the Marquis of Pombal, who designed it according to an Enlightenment-inspired grid plan similar to Lisbon's downtown. This rapid construction was motivated by the need to exert political control over the border and to centralize the profitable fishing and canning industries. The central Marquês de Pombal Square is a prime example of 18th-century urban planning, featuring symmetrical buildings and a distinctive stone pavement. For decades, the city was a major hub for tuna and sardine processing, although the economy has since shifted toward tourism and commerce. Its proximity to the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the vast beaches of the Monte Gordo area makes it a significant destination.
