Taqah is a coastal town in Dhofar province with about 25,000 inhabitants, located about 35 kilometers east of Salalah on the Indian Ocean. The town was historically an important port for the export of frankincense, which has shaped the Dhofar region since the 3rd millennium BC. The 19th-century Taqah Fort was built under Sultan Said bin Sultan and now houses a museum documenting the traditional way of life of the region and the history of the Sultanate of Oman. About 5 kilometers west is the archaeological site of Sumhuram (Khor Rori), a UNESCO World Heritage site from the 1st century BC, which is part of the 'Land of Frankincense' World Heritage site. Taqah is also an important center for sardine-fishing, with traditional drying facilities.
