Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes in Słupsk (Poland)

Weather…

The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes in Słupsk is a magnificent Renaissance residence that once served as a primary seat of the powerful Griffin dynasty. Originally founded in 1507 by Duke Bogislaw X as a late Gothic stronghold, it was extensively rebuilt in the late 16th century under Duke John Frederick into a prestigious palace reflecting Northern Renaissance aesthetics. The building is characterized by its starkly elegant white facade and a prominent tower that gives commanding views of the Słupia River. Over the centuries, the castle's function shifted from a ducal home to a residence for noble widows, and later to a military warehouse and barracks under Prussian rule, which caused significant interior damage. Devastated by fire in 1945 during the final months of World War II, the castle underwent a complete reconstruction in the postwar period. It now houses the Museum of Central Pomerania, famous for holding the world's largest collection of works by the renowned Polish artist and philosopher Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, known as Witkacy. The site remains a bustling cultural hub, surrounded by historic granaries and the scenic ducal park.
