Słowiński Moving Dunes (Poland)

Weather…

The moving dunes in the Słowiński National Park form a highly surreal, desert-like landscape situated directly on the cool Polish Baltic coast. Driven by constant westerly winds, these gigantic masses of sand relentlessly push inland, inexorably swallowing entire pine forests and swamps, whose dead tree stumps often emerge ghostly from the sand years later. This incredibly unique, dynamic ecosystem completely separates the open sea from shallow coastal lakes such as Lake Łebsko, creating a highly diverse coastal environment. The extreme dryness on the dune ridges essentially forces the sparse vegetation to adopt remarkable adaptation strategies. Visitors can experience the fascinating phenomenon of the migrating sand mountains up close on designated paths, with the striking view from the highest point, Lącka Góra, overlooking sand, forest, and sea.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The moving dune is generally accessed from the coastal resort of Łeba. From the parking lot, it is still a few kilometers by foot, rental bike, or electric cart.
📅
Best season
Late spring and early autumn are usually the most pleasant, as the large sandy areas can become exceedingly hot and heavily crowded during July and August.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The deep, soft sand makes walking across the tall dunes noticeably tiring. There are clearly marked routes through forested areas before hitting the wide open sandy expanse.
🎒
What to bring
On sunny days, it is absolutely essential to bring plenty of drinking water, a hat, and sunscreen. Comfortable shoes that you can easily slip off are considered highly optimal.
🅿️
Parking
There are large, managed parking lots in Rąbka near Łeba. In peak summer, it is highly worthwhile to arrive very early to successfully avoid long lines and frustrating wait times.
⚠️
Safety
Strictly remain within the permitted zones to avoid damaging the highly protected dune landscape. In very strong winds, blowing sand can easily irritate eyes and severely reduce visibility.
⏱️
Time needed
A comprehensive visit from the parking lot to the vast dunes and back, combined with a little relaxed time right on the beach, usually demands anywhere between three and five solid hours.
