Łącka Dune (Poland)

Weather…

The Łącka Dune (Wydma Łącka) is the most striking geomorphological phenomenon of the Polish Baltic coast and the centerpiece of the Słowiński National Park. This massive wandering dune, composed of fine, white quartz sand, stretches as a crescent-shaped hill between the open Baltic Sea and the shallow Lake Łebsko. Driven by the constant and powerful westerly winds, the sand giant moves relentlessly eastward at a rate of up to ten meters per year. Along its path, the dune slowly but surely swallows the adjacent coastal pine forest; the dead, bleached tree stumps emerge from the sand like ghosts years later, long after the dune has moved on. From its windswept crest, towering over 40 meters high, an almost desert-like panorama unfolds, rightfully earning the dune the nickname 'the Polish Sahara'.
