Orlová is situated in the Moravian-Silesian borderland and is historically tied to the development of hard coal mining in the Ostrava basin. Its first written mention dates back to 1223, but the town's primary expansion occurred during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. Intensive coal extraction led to rapid population growth but also caused significant mining subsidence, which fundamentally altered the original cityscape. Many historical structures had to be demolished due to ground instability, meaning modern Orlová now largely consists of housing estates built in the second half of the 20th century. Despite its heavy industrial background, the city strives to preserve green spaces, such as the local castle park. Culturally, the town is part of the Euroregion Cieszyn Silesia, where Czech and Polish influences converge. Today, Orlová faces the challenge of economic restructuring following the conclusion of large-scale coal mining activities.
