Hel Peninsula (Poland)

Weather…

The Hel Peninsula is a highly fascinating geological formation stretching deeply into the southern Baltic Sea like a narrow, curved tongue of sand, effectively shielding the Bay of Gdańsk from the open ocean. At its absolute narrowest point, the sandbar is barely 150 meters wide, amazingly allowing visitors to simultaneously view the stormy waves of the Baltic Sea and the much calmer waters of the bay. The peninsula is primarily composed of exceedingly fine, white sand deposited here over centuries by sea currents and winds. Besides the dense, wind-swept pine forests that critically stabilize the sand, Hel is also home to a vital seal sanctuary entirely dedicated to the conservation of the endangered Baltic grey seal. During the summer, the strong, steady winds quickly transform the shallow waters of the inner bay into one of the premier locations for kitesurfers and windsurfers in all of Europe.
