Suasi Island (Peru)

Weather…

Suasi Island is an exclusive, approximately 43-hectare private island located in the northeastern part of Lake Titicaca, far from the standard tourist circuits. It belongs to the Moho District in the Puno Region and is renowned for its commitment to ecotourism and environmental conservation. The island was rehabilitated by sociologist Martha Giraldo, who transformed the land into a private sanctuary for local flora and fauna. It is home to numerous native plant species, such as the Queñua tree, as well as various bird species and a resident herd of alpacas and vicuñas. The microclimate on the island is slightly milder than the surrounding Altiplano due to the lake's thermal mass, allowing for diverse vegetation. Structures on the island were built using traditional materials like adobe and thatch, utilizing solar energy for power. Suasi gives an atmosphere of absolute silence and seclusion, making it convenient for nature observation and astronomical studies due to the extremely clear night skies. From the island's hills, visitors can enjoy expansive views over Lake Titicaca, which appears almost like an ocean in this area.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Travel to this exclusive private island is typically done by motorboat originating from Puno or other smaller local ports. The boat ride often takes several hours and is usually meticulously organized directly through the ecological hotel located there.
📅
Best season
A visit is possible all year round, but the sunny dry season from May to October is usually preferred for the absolute best scenic views. The extreme cold during the nights is a very constant factor throughout the year on this high-altitude lake.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The island features a rather gently hilly terrain with wonderfully laid out, easily walkable paths winding through the native flora. Visitors can relaxingly hike around the manageable area without ever having to conquer any extremely steep inclines.
🎒
What to bring
Since the focus is mainly on nature observation and relaxation, comfortable hiking shoes and wind-resistant clothing are completely sufficient. Sunscreen, a good camera for the wildlife, and extra warm clothing for the icy evenings are very important.
🅿️
Parking
As on all islands in the lake, there are absolutely no roads or parking spaces available here. Travelers typically park their vehicles on the mainland in Puno at their port or hotel and exclusively use the carefully organized motorboat transfer.
⚠️
Safety
The island is widely considered a highly secure and sheltered place for all tourists. The main rule is to respectfully maintain the sensitive ecological balance, strictly stay on marked paths, and take the strong high-altitude solar radiation seriously.
⏱️
Time needed
To fully enjoy the absolute isolation and deep tranquility of the ecological reserve, a stay of two to three nights is most commonly booked. Day trips are theoretically possible but are very rarely practiced due to the lengthy boat journey required.
