Taquile Island
Taquile is a hilly island on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca, located approximately 45 kilometers from the city of Puno. The island is famous for its centuries-old traditions and the unique social structure of its approximately 2,200 Quechua-speaking inhabitants. Taquile is particularly renowned for its textile art, which was designated as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005. On the island, knitting is traditionally performed by men, while women spin the wool and weave; the quality of these textiles is considered among the finest in Peru. There are no cars or hotels on the island, and tourism is managed collectively by the community based on the principle of reciprocity. The landscape is dominated by agricultural terraces dating back to Inca and pre-Inca times, used for cultivating potatoes, maize, and quinoa. Visitors must ascend a steep path featuring over 500 stone steps to reach the main village, which sits at an elevation of 3,950 meters. The island's higher vantage points offer memorable views of the deep blue lake and the snow-capped Cordillera Real in Bolivia.
