Huandoy is a spectacular mountain massif in the Cordillera Blanca of Peru, comprising four distinct peaks, the highest of which reaches 6,395 meters. Located within the Huascarán National Park, it stands directly opposite Huascarán, Peru's highest mountain, from which it is separated by the deep Llanganuco Gorge. The geological composition of the massif is primarily granite, making it a demanding and technical challenge for experienced mountaineers. The first ascent of the main summit was achieved in 1932 by a German expedition led by Erwin Schneider. The area is renowned for its steep ice walls and complex glacial systems, which have undergone significant transformation in recent decades due to shifting climatic patterns. Beyond its significance for alpinism, Huandoy acts as a crucial water source for the lower valleys of the Ancash region. The mountain's majestic presence dominates the skyline of towns like Yungay and Caraz, drawing numerous visitors to the Peruvian High Andes each year.
